Business Challenge
Guy Carpenter, after years of building information systems to meet specific business needs, realized that it had multiple islands of information with few bridges to link the information together into timely and meaningful management information. They conducted a study to determine what management information system (MIS) capabilities the organization would need for ongoing business requirements. The study identified the following challenges:
- Difficulty delivering meaningful information to the right people in the right format at the right time
- Multiple systems giving different answers to the same business questions
- Information systems and business personnel spending significant time developing special reports
- Multiple PC-based and small server systems obtaining extracts of data, using multiple means, from scores of corporate legacy systems and external data sources
Additionally the study identified that to meet its future business requirements, the organization needed an easy way to access and manage information in four key areas: current and historical revenue results, marketing and competitive information, workflow and activity tracking, and client and prospect information. They also required the right analytical tools to understand their data in greater depth.
Guy Carpenter chose CSI as the partner to develop a data warehouse and MIS program.
CSI Solution
CSI outlined a phased approach that focused first on Revenue & Expenses, Premium Volume, Client Lists and Market Lists. CSI used its data warehouse methodology to design, develop and implement the system well within the client's required time frame. The MIS was a client/server implementation consolidating information from scores of different internal and external sources. These data sources were combined into a single data mart accessed by a common user interface. Additional data marts were constructed within the plan to roll out a distributed data warehouse encompassing all corporate data.
This new system features extensive drill-down and online analytical processing (OLAP) capabilities. Users simply "point and click" on pre-defined graphical presentation formats to analyze data. Users easily create ad hoc reports by pointing and clicking on the desired variables.
Return on Investment
The first phase of the MIS, completed in several months, was extremely well received by the Business User community after minimal training. Reports, which took days and weeks to prepare in the past (if available at all), are now available at the touch of a button. Over fifteen information systems and business personnel no longer have to spend time developing custom reports to meet user requests. The Data Warehouse and Management Information System provides millions of dollars in economic value, and delivered a return on investment (ROI) in several months.
